After more than a decade of deliberation, China adopted its first anti-monopoly law on August 30. Most Chinese have experi-enced the inconvenience and negative effects of monopolies. Some local governments issue circulars, stipulating that only certain kinds of commodities are allowed into markets under their jurisdic-tion. Some monopoly businesses impose imparity clauses on con-sumers, forcing the latter to accept overpriced services.
